Route
and Points of Interest
1.Take the Hockerton Road from Upton. For background to Upton see
Fiskerton, Rolleston and Upton Walk. After a short distance there
is a right turn and the road widens. Adequate parking can be found
on the verges. Continue along the road for about 1km until you reach
the main Mansfield to Newark road. Turn left towards Mansfield and
after 100m take the track (bridleway) on the right just past a cottage.
2. Follow the bridleway for about 300m when the track turns to the
left just before the next field boundary. Continue following this
track. This track was a parish boundary in 956 A.D. and you will
notice the many different species of tree along this track gives
evidence for the great age of this track. After 500m you will come
to a metal gate.
3. Pass through the metal gate turning right and follow the field
boundary. When you reach the end of the field, continue straight
on by first turning right through the metal gate then immediately
left into Cheveral Woods. The path climbs up hill through the wood
and when you reach the edge of the wood, follow the bridleway which
follows the right hand field boundary for about 500m until you reach
the end of the field when you take the track to the right.
4. Follow the track at first along the left side of the field and
then between hedges until you reach Averham Park. Just before a
line of three pairs of cottages take the footpath to the right.
We will now follow the Trent Valley Way back to Upton.
5.
The footpath initially follows the left hand field boundary passing
past Averham Park house which can be seen through the trees on the
left. Pass into the next field and continue to follow the left hand
field boundary in a Southerly direction. Follow the Trent Valley
Way until you reach a footbridge over a stream to the main Mansfield
to Newark Road.Turn right towards Newark, taking great care on this
busy road and after 100m take the footpath on the right.
6.
This footpath goes diagonally to the right across the field crossing
after 50m into the next field. Continue in a straight line up Micklebarrow
Hill and at the top cross the small field to a wood style ove a
wire fence. Follow the sign Trent Valley Way across the field to
another wooden style. Continue in a staight line towards Southwell
Racecourse with Upton in the distance. The path drops down the hill
to a wood gate into the next field. Continue in the same direction,
across the field to cross a concrete bridge. The path continues
along the same line to a gap in the hedge on the left hand side.
At the Newark to Upton road turn right to take you back to Upton.
