Route
and Points of Interest
1.
From Meadow Lane in Burton Joyce walk towards the River Trent. Burton
Joyce is a linear village and sprawls along the busy Nottingham
to Southwell Road. The village now has the character of a suburb
of Nottingham and less of a Trentside village. The church has a
large churchyard with evergreens and has a 13th century tower and
spire. The nave and font also date back to that time. The railway
runs nearby and parallel to the road. Cross over the railway, go
down Trent Lane and after 50m cross the tarmac road. Continue in
this direction until you reach the river Trent.
2.
Follow the path by the side of the river downstream. When Trent
lane turns off to the left continue by the river by crossing over
the wooden style. Continue to follow the river, you will see Shelford
on the other side. After abou 1½ miles, Trent Lane joins the footpath,
but continue to follow the river. After 200m take the footpath to
your left over a field for some 30m towards the edge of a gravel
lake.
3. The path goes between trees by the side of the lake and when
you reach the next field, turn left towards Burton Joyce and walk
along the leftside of the field away from the lake. The path follows
a ditch for a short distance and continues in a straight line to
cross the field. At the hedge turn right and follow it around. Follow
the field boundary keeping the hedge on your left and when you see
a further hedge about 50m in front of you running parallel to the
first hedge, cross over to this hedge and follow the hedge around
to the left.
4.
When you reach a tarmac road by a car park turn right. Follow this
road through Bulcote Farm Buildings and then on to the pretty hamlet
of Bulcote. At the T junction take the road that iws straight on
but slightly to the right until you reach the main Nottingham to
Southwell Road. Cross the main road, bearing left and take the public
bridleway that goes behind charming Bucote Chapel. After 200m the
track turns off towards Hill Farm but we continue in the same direction
taking the track where after 50m there is a metal gate. Pass through
and follow the Bridleway for about ¾ mile through several fields
to the top ot the ridge where you take the footpath through a gate
to the left.
5.
Follow this track between hedges until it turns off to the right
where you pick up the footpath over a style initially between hedges
towards Burton Joyce. Cross over another style and follow the field
on the right hand side. Cross a style, then 2 gates and a style
to a lane (Orchard Close). At the main road turn right, past the
Weatsheaf Inn and take the 2nd left down Meadow Lane crossing over
the busy Nottingham to Southwell Road and back to your start point.
