The historic town of Southwell is one of the hidden gems of Nottinghamshire. It is dominated by its historic Minster, which dates back to the 12th century. Southwell Minster, Southwell, NG25 OJP. Tel. 01636 812649. Near the Minster was villa in Roman times. Nearby are the ruins of the palace of the archbishops of York dating back to the 14th century.
At the other end of the town is Burgage Green. Adjoining the green is Burbage Manor where young Byron stayed with his mother in the early part of the 19th century.
Southwell is also famed for being the origin of the Bramley Apple and there is a pub named after it in the town.
Reg Taylors Garden Centre is worth a visit, not only for its superb range of plants and its tea rooms but also for its bird sanctuary.
If you feel like some exercise you could also try the Southwell Trail. This runs along the track of an old railway line towards Farnsfield.
The Bramley apple at Sourthwell is old pub is now fitted out in a Bistro style but serving pub grub at lunchtime and restaurant food in the evening - a straightforward town pub for local people with friendly and helpful service, selling good quality, good value food. The pub also has accomodation. They serve traditional well kept beers including cask ales from the local brewery, Springhead. The pub sign here until a few years ago, was a large 3D bramley apple some six feet in diameter sadly now replaced by the present hanging wood sign.
The Hearty Goodfellow in Southwell was refurbished to a very high standard in 2002. It claims to be the closest pub to the Southwell Workhouse (National Trust) that does food. The pub has an attractive interior, good atmosphere and a good sized garden. Sells a good range of good value, home cooked food including vegetarian options. Helpful Landlord and Landlady. There is good disabled access. Children welcome. Dogs are welcome in the patio area only.
The Old Coach House at Southwell is a very popular pub. It keeps a good range of traditional and guest beers and is one of our favourites. These are changed regularly and you are invited to sample before you buy. With the high turnover here the beers are new every week. Although it was renovated to a high standard and still retains its charm as a traditional pub. There is a small beer garden. With friendly landord Steve, helpful bar staff and excellent beer it is well worth a visit. In the early evening there is often free snacks available but the pub does not serve meals. It has been awarded many rewards for its beers.
The Saracens Head at Southwell is a fine, old historic 16th century coaching Inn and Hotel in the centre of Southwell where Charles 1 spent his last hours of freedom before his final surrender. The inn changed its name from the King''s Head after Charles'' execution! Worth a visit more for its historic charm than for its beers and its food.
