Eakring is an attractive Nottinghamshire village. Famous for its oil wells! During the Second World War, England was very short of oil. Oil had been found in 1933 here and 'nodding donkeys' to pump the oil from the deep wells were installed by Texans brought over to try to find oil in the UK. There were originally 170 nodding donkey oil pumps in Duke's Wood, near Eakring, producing more than 600,000 tonnes of oil between 1939 and 1965. Duke's wood is now a protected site with five pumps, recently restored, remaining forming part of a wildlife and industrial archaeological trail through woodland. The restoration work was carried out by theNottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. There are also some good short walks from the center of Eakring village.
