The name Bingham (Bingheham in the Domesday books 1086) means The home of Bynna's people. The town probably dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, possibly 500 - 700 AD. However one mile to the north of the town now under a roundabout on the Fosse was the earlier Roman military post of Margidunum. In AD50 this would have been a frontier outpost. Cheese, including Stilton, first mentioned in the area in 1720 would have been sold at the market. The market place in the center of the town has anew Butter Cross, designed by Hine and put up in 1861. Most of the buildings around the market place also date to Victorian times. All Saints Church dates from the 13th century. With the advent of the Nottingham to Grantham railway in 1850, this market town has now become a dormitory town for Nottingham workers. Little now remains of the old town as in recent years it has been extended with large housing estates.
