Oxton is a large village on the A6097 some 5 miles north of Lowdham. There is an important iron age fort to the north of Oxton. This fort (Oldox Camp) is one of the largest remaining Iron Age hill forts in Nottinghamshire. It has a single rampart, ditch and counterscarp on the west, and three banks and ditches on the east. The large mound, which is some six m high and found outside the north-west entrance is known as Robin Hood’s Pot. It is probably a round barrow and has produced a pot of Roman coins and a saxon burial.
The 19th century Ye Olde Bridge Inn at Oxton is on the edge of the village not far from the roundabout. Interesting reasonable value food. Bar meals up. Separate no smoking restaurant. Garden with childrens play area.
