The Motte and Baliey castle is one of the examples in Nottinghamshire. It was probably built by John de Caux just shortly after the Norman conquest in 1066. There was a ditched mound with a timber tower on top. It had two independent enclosures, baileys through which the tower was reached.
Laxton, with its unique medieval open field farming system, its castle and its great pub, is one of our favourite Nottinghamshire villages.
Laxton Visitors Centre, Laxton, Newark, NG22 0NU. Although compact, is well worth a visit. It is next to the Dovecote Inn.
The Dovecote at Laxton is just opposite the Laxton visitor''s centre, this traditional pub is at the heart of this village, famous for its open field system of farming and its old ruined castle. The pub has a reputation throughout the area for the quality of its good value traditional pub food. The pub is very popular with families and it is adviseable to book. Children allowed in eating areas. Friendly staff.
