The village of Wellow has retained a lovely green surrounded by interesting 17th and 18th century cottages, two pubs, both listed here, and a parish church dating back to the 12th century.
The village's uniqueness comes form the 60 ft high maypole in the center of the villages green. This is one of only three permanent maypoles in England. Normally made of timber, Wellow's maypole is made of metal for increased durability. Wellow's May festival is an event not to be missed!
The Durham Ox at Wellow was Notts Pub of the Month for February 2001. The pub was choosen as Community Pub of the Year out of almost 3000 English and Welsh pubs in a competition organised by the Unique Pub Company.
The Olde Red Lion at Wellow is just opposite the Wellow maypole, this 400 year old beamed country pub is full of charm and a lively character. Has a good range of real ales and an extensive, good value food menu with main courses starting froim under £5 per person, but service can be slow with variable service. The local Maypole brewery supplies Lions Pride specially for the pub. There is a small garden area at the rear. Worth a visit.
