Thurgurton is an attractive village on the A612 between Southwell and Lowdham.
The priory of Austin Canons was founded in the 12th century by Ralph d'Eyncourt. The parish church is all that remains of priory. The grounds are said to be haunted by one of the Black Canons!

The Red Lion at Thurgarton was originally a monk''s ale house to the nearby Thurgarton Priory, and the scene of a notorious murder, details of which can be seen in the bar. This popular 16th century country pub is on the main Southwell to Lowdham road. It has a reputation over many years for good quality and good value meals. Chalk board specials. Vegetarian options. Sunday roasts. Separate restaurant. Food served all day weekends and Bank Holiday Mondays. The Red Lion has recently refurbished to a high standard. There is a good selection of well kept beers.Main course include Steak and Kidney Pie (£8.25), 10oz Sirloin Steak (£12.95), Cajun Chickin (£8.95), Three Cheese Pasta & Btroccoli Bake - suitable for vegetarians (£7.75) and Pork & Stilton (8.95). Food is served 12 - 2 pm and 7 to 10.00 pm Monday to Friday and All day Saturday and Sunday from noon to 10pm and 9.30 pm respectively. Food can be served in the garden.
