The town was once an ancient market town on the river Maun. The Romans had a camp here. Mansfield is at the center of Robin Hood country and Sherwood Forest, although with the advent of coal mining, little of these connections can easily be seen in the town now. The air of a previous Victorian industrial past is still dominant even with the new retail parks that have opened up on the ring road. A large railway viaduct with 15 arches, built in 1875, dominates the center of the town. It is one of the largest viaducts in an English town. The popular and bustling open air markets are held in the market place and are full of colourful stalls, selling fruit and vegetables, linen and bric-a-brac.
The town has a good shopping center with some large stores although there are few building of historical or architectural interest. Of note is the Old Meeting House and parsonage at Stockwell Gate. This has close associations with the Presbyterian Movement founded in the area in the 1600's. The building dates from the early 18th century and is now one of the oldest chapels still in use in the country. Inside are several William Morris windows in superb condition.
For families, the popular Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Centre in Bath Street with its superb leisure and competition pools, flume, poolside piazza-style cafe, poolside bubble pool, water fountains, wave machine and tropical plants and temperatures is well worth a visit.
Near the marketplace is a Museum and Art Gallery, Leeming Street, Mansfield. Tel. 01623 463088. Displays of local interest including a model of a Roman Villa that once stood at Mansfield Woodhouse and watercolours by Buxton. The local Woodhouse stone from Mansfield Woodhouse, was used to build the House of Commons in London.
