The village of Egmanton is about 5 miles east of Ollerton on the A1 and used to be a place of pilgrimage in the middle ages for those visiting the Shrine of our Lady. In 1896 the 7th Duke of Newcastle revived the ancient cult of visiting the shrine and refurbished the church. Parts of the present church of St Mary date back to 12th century. The shrine can be found to the north side of the cancel. Egmanton also has a well preserved motte and bailey castle. Both the church and the castle are worth a visit.
The Old Plough at Egmanton is a traditional, straightforward country pub with modern extension now under new management. When we visited (July 2000) draught bass was on offer at £1.50 per pint. The pub serves a range of good value food.
