Caythorpe is about 2 miles East of Lowdham, and this small, attractive village, straddles the road towards the river Trent. The village pub is famous for its connections with the notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin and his horse Black Bess. There is a local legend that he used to leave the Fosse Way (on the other side of the Trent) and ford across the river, which in those day's would have been much slower and probably semi-marsh land.. He would hide up in the inn for several days at a time to hide from the authorities. There is reputed to be a small room or cupboard with two escape routes. This point in the Trent is now frequented by water skiers. Ferry Farm Park is a little further on towards Hoveringham. In the village, there is a traditional frame knitters workshop is amongst the 18th century buildings and watermill opposite the pub's car park.
The Black Horse at Caythorpe is a small, old beamed country pub with its own small brewery producing Dover Beck Bitter. Serves good pub food. Reputed to be a favorite hide out for Dick Turpin and his horse Black Bess, hence the name of the pub.
