Woolley Moor
The small village
of Wooley Moor was formed on the old packhorse route and dates back
to medieval times. The oldest building in the village has been dated
at 1590, a date carved in the stonework of Handleys Fields Farm.
The nearby Ogston Reservoir changed the nature of the village
in 1960 taking over much of the farmland. The lake is now used by
dinghy sailors and has a wide variety of bird life. South Wingfield
Manor is also nearby. This was built by Ralph Cromwell around
1440 and was later the favorite residence of the Shrewsburys. The
6th Earl of Shrewsbury was married to Bess of Hardwick. The manor
was destroyed during the Civil War by Oliver Cromwell's troops by
cannon fire.
