The Miners Standard, Winster
Basic country pub with interesting history. Good value food and a separate dining area and well kept ales. There are good view and camping adjacent to the pub. The Miners Standard was originally built as a farmhouse in 1653. In 1753 with increased traffic from the turnpike road, it was converted to an inn. The inn is reputed to be haunted with at least two ghosts! The inhabitants of Winster were extensively engaged in mining operations. There were several levels, of which the Portway mine was the greatest, which drains several mines in its course of three miles to the Derwent. The name the Miner's Standard is derived from the dish used for the measurement of ore. These dishes were originally around 16 pints capacity.

Winster

Market House (NT) ,Winster

The historic village of Winster is on the B5056 some 3 miles west of Matlock and was once a market town. To the south on the slope of the hill are old lead miners' cottages. The main street is very attractive and you may wish to spend some time exploring this village and its narrow and winding streets off the main street. The Market Hall (National Trust) has stone below and the hall above was rebuilt in brick. This was originally timber framed. It is now a National Trust Information centre. (tel. 01335 350245). The countryside around is on the one side limestone upland (White Peak) and gritstone moorland. The Miners Standard pub at the top of the hill at the back of Winster with commanding views derives its name from the Henry the VIII standard measure used in lead mining. There are many good walks around Winster.
