Chesterfield
Chesterfield
is a large busy industrial town famed for its church's crooked spire.
Some five miles off the M1, it is a gateway town to the eastern
side of the peak district. The town was founded on iron-mining and
engineering. The spire of the church is some 230 feet high and is
strangely twisted 8ft out of the perpendicular as the timbers have
warped under the lead roof. George Stephenson is buried in Trinity
Church under the communion table.
