Buxton
The attractive
spa town of Buxton is built around the hot springs in the town which
are claimed to have curative properties. It is probable that the
Romans first developed the town as it lies on a Roman road from
Manchester to Lincoln and claims to be the highest town in Britain.
Buxton developed during the 17th century under the influence of
the Devonshires (of Chatsworth Hall fame) and their influence can
now be seen throughout the town. The famous Devonshire Royal Hospital
is magnificent with its dome, claimed to be the widest unsupported
dome in the world. The pavilion with its gardens are also worth
a visit.
