Britain's Oldest Pub
Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is one of the best preserved and fascinating pub sites in England. It is full of history, legend and atmosphere. It dates back to 1189 AD and claims to be the oldest pub in England. The name comes from the ascension to the throne of Richard the Lionheart, and his Third Crusade against the Saracens in the same year the pub was built. With 'trip' meaning 'a resting place' at this point in history, it is probable that crusaders would stop off for a drink here on their way to the Holy Land. With a range of guest ales, the pub even boasts one of its own - why not try an 'Olde Trip'?
